Toxicology

In several studies, application of high concentrations of some brands of bergamot oil directly to the skin was shown to increase redness after exposure to ultraviolet light; however, this should not apply to ordinary oral consumption of Earl Grey tea. Bergamot is a source of bergamottin which, along with the chemically related compound 6′,7′-dihydroxybergamottin, is known to be responsible for grapefruit–drug interactions in which the consumption of the juice affects the metabolism of a variety of pharmaceutical drugs.

In one case study, a patient who consumed four litres of Earl Grey tea per day reported muscle cramps, which were attributed to the function of the bergapten in bergamot oil as a potassium channel blocker. The symptoms subsided upon reducing his consumption of Earl Grey tea to one litre per day.

Preparation and variations

«Earl Grey» as applied to tea is not a registered trademark, and numerous tea companies produce their own versions of Earl Grey tea, using a wide variety of tea leaves and additives.

A bergamot orange from Calabria, Italy

Bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia) is a small citrus tree which blossoms during the winter and is grown commercially in Calabria, Italy. It is probably a hybrid of Citrus limetta (sweet lime) and Citrus aurantium (bitter orange).

• There are different varieties of a tea known as Lady Grey; the two most common kinds (Cornflower Lady Grey and Citrus Lady Grey), which combine Earl Grey tea with cornflower and Seville oranges, respectively. «Lady Grey» is a trademark of Twinings.
• A beverage called «London Fog» is a combination of Earl Grey, steamed milk and vanilla syrup.
• There are variations available including such ingredients as jasmine, as well as various flowers. A blend with added rose petals is known as French Earl Grey, which has become the most popular blend at Australian tea store T2.
• A variety called Russian Earl Grey often contains ingredients such as citrus peels and lemon grass in addition to the usual black tea and bergamot.
• Also, several companies make a tea called Earl Grey Green or «Earl Green» tea, combining green tea leaves rather than the traditional black tea leaves with bergamot flavouring. A similar variation called Earl Grey White or «Earl White» tea combines white tea leaves with bergamot flavouring.
• Rooibos Earl Grey is a variation using this South African herbal tea as a substitute for the conventional form made with black tea.

Twinings reformulation

Twinings reformulated their Earl Grey tea in April 2011, claiming to have added «an extra hint of bergamot and citrus». The overwhelmingly negative comments on the Web site were picked up by the press, who drew attention to the establishment of a related protest group on .

Черный чай Эрл Грей, который мы покупаем в магазинах содержит
искусственный ароматизатор бергамота.

Уважающий себя производитель так и напишет на упаковке:

«чай черный, байховый, ароматизатор — бергамот» или «чай такой-то с ароматом бергамота».

Бывает, что пишут — «с маслом бергамота» или внушительно — «с натуральным маслом бергамота».

Возможно, это действительно масло, но не эфирное и в любом случае его
химический аналог.

Разумеется, в промышленном масштабе добавлять в чай натуральное
вещество не возможно. Это очень дорого. Для всех.

Споры о натуральности вещества (в нашем случае ароматизатора), а
именно о самом определении слова «натуральный» были и будут.

Это так же, как производитель косметики утверждает, что продукт
натуральный, но минеральное масло входящее в состав крема получают
из нефти, разумеется очищенной. Однако нефть добывают из недр
земли, а все что создано природой и находится над и под землей
считается «натуральным».

Хочется верить, что там, где повсеместно выращивают чайный куст и
производят вязаные, ферментированные чаи можно найти настоящий чай
с маслом бергамота.

Мы сделаем бергамотовый чай сами, тем более, что нет ничего проще!

Понадобится

1. Жестяная или стеклянная банка с крышкой
2. Хороший черный чай — Orange Pekoe, Darjeeling, мелколистовой — 100- 200 гр
3. Эфирное масло Бергамота — 5-7 капель

Важно! В кулинарных, косметических и лечебных целях используются только высококачественные эфирные масла!

Как сделать

1. Пересыпать чай в банку
2. Накапать эфирное масло бергамота и сразу закрыть (закрутить) банку крышкой

Совет: добавляя эфирное масло в чай, капайте капли вразброс, встряхивая банку. Закрытую крышкой банку, переворачивайте с минуту, а затем поставьте ее в шкаф отдыхать.

Теперь наберитесь терпения. Для хорошей ароматизации чая не
открывайте банку 3-5 дней, только переворачивайте ее, перемешивая
чай.

Через неделю вы получите сногсшибательный, ароматный, «дорогой» чай.
Вкус такого чая тонкий, гармоничный, с характерным ароматом
бергамота. Настоящий, благородный Эрл Грей!

Данным способом можно ароматизировать чай эфирными маслами:Лимона, Апельсина, Мандарина, Грейпфрута, Герани, Лаванды, Розы.

History

Tin of Earl Grey tea

The Earl Grey blend, or «Earl Grey’s Mixture», is assumed to be named after Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, British Prime Minister in the 1830s and author of the Reform Bill of 1832. He reputedly received a gift, probably a diplomatic perquisite, of tea flavoured with bergamot oil. A «Grey’s Tea» is known from the 1850s, but the first known published references to an «Earl Grey» tea are advertisements by Charlton & Co. of Jermyn Street in London in the 1880s.

According to one legend, a grateful Chinese mandarin whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Lord Grey’s men first presented the blend to the Earl in 1803. The tale appears to be apocryphal, as Lord Grey never set foot in China and the use of bergamot oil to scent tea was then unknown in China. However, this tale is subsequently told (and slightly corrected) on the Twinings website, as «having been presented by an envoy on his return from China».

Jacksons of Piccadilly claim they originated Earl Grey’s Tea, Lord Grey having given the recipe to Robert Jackson & Co. partner George Charlton in 1830. According to Jacksons, the original recipe has been in constant production and has never left their hands. Theirs has been based on Chinese black tea since the beginning.

According to the Grey family, the tea was specially blended by a Chinese Mandarin-speaking individual for Lord Grey, to suit the water at Howick Hall, the family seat in Northumberland, using bergamot in particular to offset the preponderance of lime in the local water. Lady Grey used it to entertain in London as a political hostess, and it proved so popular that she was asked if it could be sold to others, which is how Twinings came to market it as a brand.

A 2010 survey found that a significant minority of people in the United Kingdom associate drinking Earl Grey tea with being «posh» or upper class.

По одной из таковых, в некое английское судно, перевозившее партию чая и бергамотового масла из Индии в Великобританию, угодило в шторм. Во время качки несколько бочек с бергамотовым маслом перевернулись (в другом варианте — разбились бутыли), и масло залило тюки с чайным листом. Дороговизна обоих грузов не позволила владельцу корабля просто выкинуть «испорченный» чай, который впоследствии попал на прилавки и пришёлся по нраву англичанам. Новый сорт назвали по имени лорда Грея, владевшего индийскими чайными плантациями.

По ещё одной версии, создатель бренда «Earl Grey» был лорд Джордж Стаунтон. Ещё в он, так же, как впоследствии Чарльз Грей, отправился с дипломатической миссией в Китай. Там он отведал зелёный чай, ароматизированный горьким . По возвращении в Англию, Стаунтон при помощи своего друга лорда Бэнкса, державшего чайный магазин, попытался воспроизвести понравившийся ему купаж. Однако за неимением горького апельсина он использовал масло бергамота, а зелёный чай заменил чёрным. Воспроизвести купаж не удалось, однако новая смесь также получилась удачной. Лорд Бэнкс, будучи знаком с Чарльзом Греем и зная о пристрастии последнего к ароматизированным чаям, нередко угощал его чаем с бергамотом, и впоследствии назвал купаж в честь этого политика, находившегося в те годы на пике популярности.

Background

During the 61st Sensha-dō Tournament, while she is only St. Gloriana’s Vice-commander, she was entrusted by the ill Overall Commander, to act as her during the tournament. In the match against Pravda Girls High School, with her Cromwell tank, she is seen charging Pravda tanks with her tank holding a calvalry saber leading a Crusader tank squad to act as a distraction for Darjeeling and her Churchill to snipe down their flag tank. After Pravda’s defeat she is seen talking with Katyusha and giving her a St.Gloriana’s gift for valuable opponents, a set of tea cups, as a sign of respect.

She then become, as a third-year student, the overall commander of St. Gloriana sensha-dō team and presumably led the school during the 62nd Sensha-dō Tournament. She’ll then eventually graduates and pass the torch to her second in command, Darjeeling.

Earl Grey tea is named after the second Earl Grey.

The Grey Cup, the championship trophy for the Canadian Football League, is named after the 4th Earl, in 1909; at the time, Lord Grey was serving as Governor General of Canada.

A column topped with a statue of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (referred to locally as Grey’s Monument), has a prominent location in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Grey County in Ontario, Canada is named after the 2nd Earl Grey.

The Gateshead fiddler James Hill (b 1811 d 1856) composed the tune «Earl Gray» in the Scottish Strathspey style, possibly to commemorate the opening of Grey’s Monument in 1838. It still remains part of the traditional music repertoire of Scotland and Northumberland.

History

Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey

The first Earl Grey was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles, 2nd Earl Grey. He was a prominent Whig politician and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834, which tenure saw the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832 and the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1833. In 1808, he also succeeded his uncle as third Baronet, of Howick.

The second Earl was succeeded by his second (but eldest surviving) son, Henry, 3rd Earl Grey. He was also a Whig politician and served under Lord John Russell as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies from 1846 to 1852. On his death, the titles passed to his nephew, Albert, 4th Earl Grey. He was the son of General the Hon. Charles Grey, third son of the second Earl. Lord Grey was governor general of Canada between 1904 and 1911. His son, Charles, 5th Earl Grey, was a major in the Army. He died without male issue and was succeeded by his second cousin once removed, Richard, 6th Earl Grey. He was the great-great-grandson of Admiral the Hon. George Grey, fourth son of the second earl. The 6th Earl died in September 2013 and was succeeded by his brother Philip, 7th Earl Grey.

The Grey baronetcy, of Howick in the County of Northumberland, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain in 1746 for Henry Grey, High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1738. A member of an old Northumberland family, he was eighth in descent from Sir Thomas Grey, of Heton, elder brother of John Grey, 1st Earl of Tankerville (see the Earl of Tankerville, 1418 creation), and fifth in descent from Sir Edward Grey, of Howick, uncle of William Grey, 1st Baron Grey of Warke. In 1720 he married Hannah, daughter of Thomas Wood of Fallodon near Alnwick in Northumberland. Grey was succeeded by his eldest son, the second baronet. He represented Northumberland in the House of Commons. He died unmarried and was succeeded by his nephew, the second Earl Grey. For further history of the baronetcy, see above.

Several other members of this branch of the Grey family have gained distinction. The Hon. George Grey (1767–1828), second son of the first Earl Grey, was created a baronet, of Fallodon in the County of Northumberland, in 1814 (see Grey baronets) and was the father of Sir George Grey, 2nd Baronet, and the great-grandfather of Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon. The Right Reverend the Hon. Edward Grey (1782–1837), fifth son of the first Earl, was Bishop of Hereford from 1832 to 1837. His fourth son Sir William Grey (1818–1878) served as Governor of Bengal from 1866 to 1871 and as governor of Jamaica from 1874 to 1877. His daughter Sybil Frances Grey (d. 1945) was the mother of Prime Minister Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon. Sir Paul Francis Grey, British Ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1957 to 1960 and to Switzerland from 1960 to 1964, was the grandson of Francis Douglas Grey, a son from the second marriage of the Right Reverend the Hon. Edward Grey, Bishop of Hereford. The aforementioned the Hon. Charles Grey, third son of the second Earl, was a general in the Army. The aforementioned the Hon. George Grey (1809–1891), fourth son of the second Earl, was an admiral in the Royal Navy.

The family seats were Howick Hall and Fallodon Hall in Northumberland.
